The Official LBFA Strip About X-Men: Schism

(Blog post written by Euge (http://adamwarrock.com), while Curt’s in San Diego)

When Curt says, “Hey do you guys want to write the strip this week?” me and Chris pretty much hear that as, “Hey, do you want to make fun of me in the strip this week?” Despite that, we fully believe that Curt is somewhere, in a tuxedo, possibly with some sort of Pokemon and/or manga-based paraphernalia on his lapel, and obviously making an ass of himself. Unlike this comic, everyone is probably partying with him and having a great time, because Curt always gets the party started right. His secret is his Huey Lewis & The News playlist on his mp3 player that he carries around with him everywhere he goes.

Anyway, X-Men: Schism. I hear it’s great, Chris has read it and says that it’s great. I haven’t had the chance to read that many comics with all the travel, so all I read are old trades and random graphic novels. Y’know, the kind of things I can carry on a plane and not destroy by the time I land. Anyway, Jason Aaron is the man, and there’s little he’s done wrong in comics, so it doesn’t surprise me. But this comic basically came about when Chris and I were sitting in his car, and saying, “Uh…so I guess we have to do something about Schism, right?” And like most LBFA strips, it ends with a boner joke. We kept it true to Curt’s true voice.

But tell us what YOU thought of X-Men: Schism, and really, what else we should have written about in this week’s strip…because…y’know…we still have to write another one this week.

    A few quick notes:
    1) X-Men: Schism #1 was great. Read it if you don’t believe me.
    2) I had some coloring assistance again by the talented Joe Hunter (ghostbucket.com).

Schism was fantastic. In fact, I would read an entire series of Wolverine shopping for dolls and eating ice cream, while occasionally yelling at Scott.

Seriously, Schism sucked. It may be the issue that sucked but it was necessary to justify the subsequent stories, but I am not holding my breath.

I imagined it would be more like three panels of chris and eugene playing together like schoolboys while curt’s away on business…hopscotch and such.

    1. X-Men: Schism is the first X-Men comic I’ve bought in about 2 years (not counting old trades).
    2. I wouldn’t call it “great,” but a) it actually had a lot of stuff happen, which I can’t say for most Marvel comics, b) I didn’t feel “lost” picking it up after so many years, and c) well, it was pretty.

Funny strip. Yeah, X-Men:Schism was cool, but that Prelude to Schism crap? I wasted my money on that.

As a general rule, I avoid all comics with the words “Prelude”, “Road to”, “Countdown” or “Judd Winick” on the cover.

In the interest of full disclosure, Matt Fraction has informed me that he is actually not at SDCC. So this comic is logically flawed.

But I’d like to imagine that Curt is actually in the throes of an acid/con-flu/drunken hallucination. And yes, even in his hallucination, Matt doesn’t remember who he is.

I saw Curt on Thursday, and he’s actually wearing a speedo with the Thundercats logo on the crotch, pretending to speak in a German accent, and asking everyone, “Are you into scat? Wait, no, I mean the music. Haha jaykay, I meant ‘poo,’ but I’m from Dusseldorf, so it’s cool.”

On another note – my brother is at SDCC, wearing a poke on shirt with bar codes on the back that people can scan on their Nintendo DS in order to see… Pokemon characters. I am so ashamed.

I enjoyed Schism a lot and am looking. forward to where it’s going. Aaron on Wolverine in general is good stuff, but I thought he handled the whole team really well.

I also appreciate Euge’s “no prize” explanation of how Matt Fraction can be appearing in the strip when he wasn’t in San Diego.

My Judd Winick rule of thumb is that I avoid all comics with his name on the cover – EXCEPT the ones that also feature the words “Frumpy the Clown” or “The Adventures of Barry Ween, Boy Genius”.

    chrishaley Reply:

I’ve never read Barry Ween, but Curt tells me it’s really good.

FWIW, I don’t hate Judd Winnick. Though I haven’t liked everything he’s written, he has written some stuff I enjoyed.

I wasn’t planning on reading it; Wolverine as the Pope just doesn’t appeal to me.
