All-Star

Not news to most people, but the All-Star Superman cartoon came out on Tuesday. Dwayne McDuffie, author of way too many comics to list and the guy who spearheaded the All-Star Superman adaptation, died on Tuesday. The timing, if you can ever say there is a good or bad timing on when to die, was awful. He should’ve had a good week, should’ve gotten a chance to see people enjoy All-Star Superman. One of his last tweets mentioned going to the All-Star Superman premiere, so I hope he got to enjoy that much of it.

Chris gets credit for the writing and art on this one.

Man, I’m still crushed about Dwayne McDuffie. I wrote a post on it hoping it would make me feel better but no such luck: http://www.postbourgie.com/2011/02/24/requiem-for-a-superhero/

Awesome, Chris! You captured my feeling exactly. I feel the goth girl scene (or maybe all of issue 10) would have made a huge difference, but the movie still had it’s own moments (Clark visiting his mom) that also made me feel something. Other than that it felt kind of flat and by the numbers. Wish they would do something original like Gotham Knight though. Dwayne really nailed the overall tone and made it work though <3

The acting aside from the guy that voiced Luthor and the number of things that were cut out kind of killed the movie for me…

It should probably be noted than the last panel was just explaining chris’ usual reaction to feature length superman adventures.

Chris crying over Superman is this strip’s Little Nemo tumbling out of bed and saying “Um! Oh My! I must have been dreaming!”

I haven’t seen it, but the clips I have seen do seem to miss a lot of the point. Superman grimaces with effort sometimes. Other than that, he should never look grim.

I welled up a little during parts of Superman Returns, and that is saying something.

The Enthusiast. I love how you’ve made a character who’s main purpose to like stuff. Double daps, CH.

I loved it, even though they left out the best story (Zibarro, the lonely Bizarro).

@Joe: Do you think if you never read All-Star Superman, you would have even known things were “cut?”

I know it’s hard to separate, but judging movie adaptations of books compared to the source material isn’t fair. It needs to stand up on its own.

(BTW, I haven’t seen it yet, so I can’t say. Just wondering if the “cuts” really hurt the animated film’s story, or if you only noticed because you knew they were “supposed” to be there.)

@PJ & Joe – Having never read the comics, April thought the movie was great and it made her want to read the comics. I think you have to judge things on what they are, and not what they could have been.

I have never read the all star comics, and I really enjoyed the cartoon. I love buying and watching all these great animated superhero flicks, heck, and most all the live action superhero films also. I’ve never been much of a critic, I just love the superhero genre. Now I’ll find the comics either for sale, or in trade and read them. I’m sure they’re are a good read.
